The Three Rules for Great Air Conditioning
We have never seen any of this information on any heating/cooling contractor website.  Probably because they're afraid that if you do it, they won't get nearly the number of calls they would otherwise.

Pay attention and impliment this information and you'll be much happier about several things.
Comfort, your utility bill and fewer breakdowns with your equipment.

#1
DO NOT USE PLEATED, ELECTROSTATIC, HYP0-ALERGENIC, ELECTRONIC OR PLEATED FILTERS UNLESS YOUR DUCTWORK WAS DESIGNED TO WORK WITH THEM.

Using expensive filters only restricts the airflow to your unit.  We only recommend 'Pinched Frame' type filters or the washable 'Hog Hair'.  Prior to installing either you should spray furniture polish on both sides.  This will help the filter catch more light dust yet still allow the volume of air the unit requires.
Buy them 4 - 12 at a time and you'll get a better price.

#2
Make sure your doors are cut above the flooring at least 1" to allow the air being supplied to the room to escape back to the return to be recirculated.  Often, either the kids or the parents close their doors at night.  If the room cannot breath, the air backs up into the main floor, leaving the bedrooms uncomfortable since they can't 'breathe'.  Leaving the doors cracked slightly or having them cut above the flooring will make a big difference in the way the unit and home behaves.

#3
Only use a 'Bar Type Register' with an 'OBD Damper'.
Most homes are built using a 'Stamped Face Register' which typically has an MSD damper, (Multiple Shutter Design).  You cannot adequately control the airflow with these types of registers as the damper opens like a shutter.  If you slightly open it, the air comes out at a 45 degree angle and doesn't create a pattern across the room.  An OBD Damper, (Opposed Blade), will allow the air out of the register in a horizontal flow and your adjustable bars allow for a pattern across the room.
If you are unable to acquire these registers yourself, (which you probably won't because Home Depot and Lowes don't carry them), you can contact us with your sizes and we'll order them for you.

If you take the time and impliment these ideas, your unit will work the best it can and you'll be much more comfortable.

If you don't, keep my number handy because you'll need to be calling us sooner or later and paying alot more in utilities.
